Why I'm Passionate About Kidney Health

Hello and welcome! My name is Sara Prato, and I am the face behind The CKD Dietitian (Chronic Kidney Disease). I live in Colorado Springs with my husband Chris and two kids, Lucas and Charlotte.

As a Dietitian that specializes in kidney nutrition, my mission is to guide individuals on their unique journey towards better kidney health and improved well-being.

Early in my career, working with kidney patients, I discovered a big gap in kidney nutrition education. Oftentimes, patients were unaware of the connection between nutrition and kidney health and many of them never saw a dietitian prior to starting dialysis.

Shocked by this, I committed to working with CKD patients to educate and guide them to make positive lifestyle changes to improve their overall health. Nutrition is powerful in promoting kidney health and I am passionate about helping CKD patients thrive and live their life to the fullest.

My goal is to help individuals confused and overwhelmed with their diagnosis, become empowered with knowledge, so they have the tools to thrive with CKD.

In 12 years as a kidney dietitian, I have worked as a dialysis dietitian, kidney transplant dietitian, and in the last 9 years as a CKD dietitian.

These experiences have allowed me to walk alongside patients and their families throughout their kidney disease journey. My approach is centered on meeting individuals where they are, providing personalized guidance, and empowering them to reach their health goals.

My Philosophy

I believe that wellness is a broader concept that stretches beyond the dietary changes necessary to manage CKD. Though eating healthy is critically important, it is only one piece of the puzzle to ensure long-term success. My passion for nutrition extends beyond my professional career. I believe food is an integral part of our lives and meant to be enjoyed. Food has the power to bring people together, foster community, and nourish us.

Just as I cherish cooking and sharing food with my family and friends, I want to help you do the same. Your journey to protecting your kidneys doesn’t have to take away from the joy of gathering around the table. I believe that sharing and enjoying food should be a part of your life.

  • M.S. degree in Nutritional Science from Bastyr University in 2008.
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), 2009.
  • National Kidney Foundation Council on Renal Nutrition (CRN) Region 5 Representative, 2022-present.
  • Certification as a Specialist in Renal Nutrition (CSR) in 2022.
  • 9+ years curriculum development and teacher focused on managing CKD through nutrition and lifestyle improvements.
